What is Evolution?

Before I go into detail about my views on evolution, I need to clarify how I will be referring to the term “theory”. To me, a theory in science is based off of varying concepts/fundamentals that explain a specific incidence. Also, I would describe evolution (in relation to organisms) as follows- how species change over time to adapt to their needs. They can change specific features/structures or even their habits to better adapt within their population or their environment. With that clarification, I believe that evolution is both a fact as well as a theory. In my opinion, evolution is a fact since it is evident that animals are not exactly the same as they were thousands of years ago. I think it also counts as a theory since our comprehension of the process is continually developing. As we find more evidence and explanations, we might find some information to be better fit in the future.

Evidence that supports evolution includes homologous structures, fossils, and genetic makeup. I believe one important thing to remember when talking about evolution is that evolution consists of sharing a common ancestor, not directly one species changing into another. This is where homologous structures have a role; common ancestors are the link for the presence of these structures and can explain how they also share similar function. Fossils depict that species are not the same as they once were, and that they have adapted as time progressed. We can learn about animals that are now extinct. Finally, we can look at DNA to understand evolution. DNA is shared between organisms showing that a common ancestor needed to be present. To examine these evolutionary changes, we can look at genetic makeup.

Overall, I believe that there are many strong pieces of evidence that make evolution a factual occurrence. A theory to me incorporates evidence, principles, and observations. A theory involves the highest understanding of our insight, making evolution considered to be a theory as well. However, I also believe that our understanding will alter as more evidence is uncovered.

  1. Hi Prutha
Well done. I really like how you consciously thought about what theories actually are and how they relate to facts.
    Cheers, Michi
